Plastic Water

Posted by
Nitin (Mayenne, France) on 13 April 2011 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

I shot this at a friend's wedding.

A regular sight this is, again, at most functions and marriage events. Weddings in india are an extravagant affair by any standards - whether it's the wedding of a middle class individual or an extremely affluent one. 'Wastage' & 'over-use' are the key words.

But well, this story is about Plastics. As compelling a visual that this arrangement of plastic cups is, equally ugly is what follows the usage of these - littered and disposed in all parts of the venues. Again long exposure to the sun with water inside definitely contaminates it further. Isn't there a better alternative?

In the old days of weddings we always had steel glasses that were used for the purpose. Washed and reused. But these days everybody is concerned about cleanliness and hygiene, that they think these glasses bring. Why so is it then, that people fall ill more these days than before? So plastics isn't the solution?

Would take this chance to introduce you all to a brilliant new documentary doing the rounds, and which I urge you all to watch. Here's a link to the trailer - it's called Plastic Planet: http://firstrunfeatures.com/plasticplanet/

Nice shot, ugly plastics - yes. Reminded me of a friend whom I met recently and she told me she prefers using plastics for small gatherings at home too. "Convinient" is what she said when I ask "why?".. Will pass over the documentary link to her :)
