Pride and Smoke

“A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

A picture taken on the same day as the previous others. There was this hotel in the north part of the bund and in there was a watchman proudly smoking his cigarette. Even more proud he was when I asked him if I could take his picture, pleased to give me various poses.

I often feel the Chinese, or Shanghainese to be more precise, have much more pride in themselves, their history and their culture than the current generation. While there's the former that tries to recall and store every bit of their history the current generation is trying desperately so to not be counted as one. Isn't that why everything white or foreign is impressive and much sought-after, both in terms of people and products.

Brands mean everything.

On a side note, I wish I had more time to post photographs and blog. Running the organization has been keeping me ever so busy, and doing freelance projects for survival in that period even more so.
