Dusk in Venice

"We are the Pilgrims, master; we should go
Always a little further: it may be
Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow
Across that angry or that glimmering sea....

We travel not for trafficking alone;
By hotter winds our fiery hearts are fanned;
For lust of knowing what should not be known,
We take the golden road to Samarkand."
James Elroy Flecker

A dusk shot along the waters of Venice. Shine in the sky, shimmer in the waters.

The older generation loves to latch on to old things, unlike the so called modern us. I had the good fortune of accompanying my grand dad on some of his errands today. Among one of the first things he wanted to do was to get his two really old table clocks fixed. And this he gave to his very old acquaintance to fix, an old man of about seventy five years of age, who had worked most of his life in a watch shop, and now had a little workshop in his own home, which was another tiny dilapidated kind of structure. All this work for less than a dollar. Even for his pens, he made sure that he only replaced the refills rather than buying new pens like most of us usually do.

To me all this is a habit developed as part of growing up where things were not so cheap, hard to get, and were valued so much more than in these current times of use-and-throw or disposable and easily available goods.

I also managed to buy my favorite fountain pens, the 'hero' pens, that I always used as a child to write all my exams as they were lucky for me, and because they made my handwriting neater. I am looking forward to going back to Shanghai to start using this pen (I'm currently in India on my Chinese New Year break).
