"And the greatest lesson that mom ever taught me though was this one. She told me there would be times in your life when you have to choose between being loved and being respected. Now she said to always pick being respected."
Chris Christie

Well said Mom! I am sure most of our moms have conveyed to us the above message in one way or another. But respect can neither be commanded nor forced out of others. It takes time and requires humility. It requires displaying consistency and persistence. It is something that needs to be earned, as rightly said by many.

But every now and then we come across people who try to force respect out of you. Where they make themselves bigger than the true mission, goals, or the organization trying to accomplish them. Where humility is lost, boastfulness creeps in, need for unwanted control arises, trust lost, team contribution forgotten, undue credit demanded, and extreme need for self-importance shows up. It could be a result of insecurity, or complex arising out of past situations.

I hope none of us have to deal with these kind of people, for they have a tendancy overpower to overpower our major positives with their negative, and make everything look hopeless and cause undue stress.

I am dealing with one at the moment, and I hope I don't have to deal with it for too long.

This picture was taken in Napoli, along the streetside. A gentleman gazing at everyday life, and kind enough to allow me to take his picture. There was extreme compassion, humility, simplicity and self-respect about him.

"There is no respect for others without humility in one's self."
Henri Frederic Amiel
